White Background Jewellery Photos for Etsy, Amazon & Shopify

By Jewellery Photoshoot Published Updated 6 min read

A clean white background is the default language of online jewellery shopping. It keeps the focus on the piece, makes catalogues look consistent, and is required for some marketplaces. Getting it genuinely white, without grey edges or colour cast, takes a little technique.

How to shoot it

  1. Use a bright, even white surface. White acrylic gives a soft reflection; white paper is cheapest.
  2. Light the background separately. Aim a light at the backdrop so it is brighter than the jewellery. That is how you get white instead of grey.
  3. Expose for the piece. Tap on the jewellery, not the paper. The background can overexpose a little.
  4. Keep the piece off the edge. Leave breathing room so you can crop to any ratio.
  5. Clean aggressively. White backgrounds show every speck.

Make it pure white

  • In any editor, use Levels: move the white point left until the background reaches 255.
  • Check the background in a colour picker. It should read 255, 255, 255.
  • If edges look haloed, reduce the adjustment or mask only the background.

Common issues

  • Grey backgrounds: the backdrop is lit less than the piece. Add background light.
  • Yellow tint: mixed lighting or warm bulbs. Use one light type.
  • Lost silver edges: the piece blends into the white. Add black card reflections to define edges.

Beyond white

White is perfect for listing images, but it won’t stop a scroll. Pair it with one or two lifestyle or on-model images: Jewellery Photoshoot can generate a white studio shot, a velvet set and an on-model version from the same upload, so your listing has both the clean main image and the emotional ones.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon require a white background for jewellery?

Yes. Amazon's main product image must be on a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255) with the product filling most of the frame and no props or text. Check Amazon's current image requirements before uploading.

How do I get a pure white background without Photoshop?

Light the background so it is brighter than the piece, shoot slightly overexposed on the background, then use a levels or exposure adjustment so the paper turns white. Many editing apps and AI tools can also cut out and whiten the background.

Should jewellery on white have a shadow?

A soft, subtle shadow or reflection makes the piece look grounded. Marketplaces generally accept it on secondary images, but the Amazon main image should remain clean.
